Toyota Adds Sales Incentives for 2007 Prius

TORRANCE, Calif. — Consumers who waited for months to get their hands on a Toyota Prius in the past and suffered through dealer markups of $1,000 or more on the gas/electric hybrid should be thrilled to hear that the Japanese automaker is now offering incentives on the car.

2007 Toyota Prius Toyota is offering interest-free loans for 24 months and three-year leases for as low as $219 a month on the Prius. The new tactic is in response to the phasing out of federal tax breaks that began last October and put a crimp in Prius sales. The incentives roll out as Toyota brings more Prius capacity online in Japan. The automaker aims to increase U.S. sales to approximately 150,000 cars this year from 107,000 in 2006.

The base 2007 Prius starts at $22,795, including a $620 destination charge. The gas/electric hybrid gets 60 mpg in city driving and 51 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. It is equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric drive motor.
